In his address to the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly yesterday, President Michel Aoun said Lebanon has almost completed a national action plan related to the implementation of the Security Council Resolution 1325. The latter calls on member states to develop strategies that empower women to participate in decision making, negotiations and conflict resolution processes. Aoun pointed out that his country’s plan included ensuring the participation of women in decision making at all levels and activating their role in conflict prevention, as well as, enacting bills to counter discrimination against them and protect them against abuse and violence. The President also stressed that Lebanon is taking steady steps towards promoting human rights at the executive and legislative levels, noting that the Lebanese parliament has passed the law establishing the National Commission on Human Rights, including a commission to investigate the use of torture or other ill-treatment methods.
