The director general of the Higher Relief Council (HRC) Maj. Gen. Mohamad Kheir, pledged on December 13 to release as of next week the compensations due to the Arsal cherry growers, who notwithstanding a Cabinet decision to this effect, have yet to receive anything yet. To recall, the council of ministers approved on October 13 the disbursement to HRC of a sum of USD 6.6 million to be paid to farmers in Arsal area in compensation for the past three years. Kheir was speaking during a meeting with representatives of the committee preparing the file, including Arsal mayor Basil Hujeiri and his deputy Rima Karnabi, in addition to a number of mouktars. Kheir was also briefed on the final editing of the lists and surveys in this regard, stating that he will soon announce the dates of distribution of the payments. (Al Mustaqbal, December 26, 2017)
