Bahrain’s parliament elected on Wednesday journalist and social activist, Fowziya Zainal, to be the first woman house speaker in the history of the Kingdom. Ruler Hamad Bin Issa Al Thani Khalifa, who described the election as a cultural transition and proud achievement, said his country has always sought to support and empower Bahraini women. The newly-elected speaker, to note, received 25 votes of the 40 members of the parliament, recalling that she ran twice for parliamentary elections before winning this past November. Zainal worked for Bahrain TV for 25 years during which she held several position, in addition to her position as a lecturer at the faculty of information at Al Ahlia University. She also received the State Medal of the Fourth Degree. (Al Diyar, December 15, 2018)
