Saudi Arabia allows women to book hotel rooms without male guardian, exempts tourists from marriage certificate

In a move to boost tourism in the Kingdom, the Saudi Commission for Tourism issued a decree on October 6 allowing local and foreign women to stay in tourism facilities without a male guardian. According to the new decision, local women have to present a proof of identity or family register, while expat women must present their original passports, similar to men. The Commission also sanctioned foreign men and women to share a room without a proof of marriage or kinship. Saudi families however, still need to prove the ‘relationship bond’. It is worth noting, that the above decisions came after Saudi Arabia announced end of September that it will introduce tourist visas for the first time in its history in a step to diversify its oil-dependent economy.
