Arabic language anxiety and effects on gender policies

Under the theme ‘Arabic language anxiety and feminist discourse’, the Nicely Hall at AUB will host on April 2 a dialogue between professors Rana Issa and Zeina Halabi. The conversation will trace the history of Arabic language anxiety and its impact on the gender policies and the reception of works by women. Through the notions of literature and discipline (adab and Ta’dib), the discourse questions the inherited renaissance (Nahda) moral education and critique in women’s writings and non-formative gendered writing in general. The debate will also tackle the fact that since the onset of the October 17 Uprising, a fresh interest has bloomed for using Arabic in communication among the youth. (Al Akhbar, March 12, 2020)
