Ministerial strategy for industrial development

18-7-2017

The minister of industry, Hussein Haj Hassan, represented President Michel Aoun during the inauguration of the Millennium plant in Hsoun, Jbeil, in the presence of MP Walid Khoury representing House Speaker Nabih Berri, the project owner, Rabii Khalil Awad and a number of mayors and makhateer, as well as, judicial, military industrial and trade union figures. During the opening ceremony, Haj Hassan described the industrial sector as the engine of economy, pledging to pursue his ministry’s policy of developing the sector through focusing on five main props, namely: increasing exports, protecting domestic production from foreign competition, reducing cost of production, improving product quality and efficacy, and the progressive introduction of technology-based industries that ease access to new markets. For his part, Awad emphasized the significance of his first industrial venture in Lebanon after the Algeria model. This step, Awad noted, “is not a risky venture as some view it. In fact, it strengthens our faith in our country and in our capacity to replicate in our homeland what we already achieved abroad in order to revive the economy and generate new jobs…” Awad concluded by saying that the future of industry in Lebanon is linked to two key dynamics, legislation and stability.
