The Gender and Sexuality Resource Center at the Arab Foundation for Freedoms and Equality is pleased to announce its monthly “Dardashat Jandariya” - Gender Talks entitled:

“If I could be more like them, and less like me”: Internalized Homonegativity in the Lebanese Context

Speaker: Sara Michli
Date: Thursday, May 21, 2015
Time: 7:30 pm
Location: Bardo
Address: Clemenceau, Beirut, Lebanon

Synopsis
Internalized homonegativity is a concept that has received a lot of attention in the literature on lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals. Even though this concept became a mainstay in the literature on same-sex desires, little is known about what predicts it and what explains it. Additionally, there is a lack of research on individuals with same-sex attractions in Arab countries, like Lebanon, where homosexuality is still covered with silence and stigma. In this talk, Sara will be explaining internalized homonegativity, and the importance of understanding it given its effects on mental health and psychological well-being. She will also present her research project (in progress) on the risk and protective factors against internalized homonegativity in the Lebanese context.
