5 bakeries control the Lebanese market on a sectarian basis
In a special feature today, Al Akhbar newspaper highlighted the bread industry in Lebanon as a basic commodity in the local market and a staple food for the average Lebanese household. According to the union of owners of bakeries in Lebanon, the country consumes around 20 to 22 thousand tons of flour each month and produces some 1070 bread parcels from each tons of flour, Al Akhbar wrote. It cited a survey by Blom Bank research center which has shown that the country’s production of bread in 2012 alone reached 785 thousand parcels per day, that is equivalent to nearly 23.5 million parcels a month. This means that Lebanese people spend roughly USD 23.5 million on bread alone each month. The above study revealed that 5 basic players control the local bread market, and they are: Moulin d’Or, Wooden Bakery, Pain d’Or, Shamseen and Sultan. The director of sales at Wooden Bakery, Michel Chaker, said small-scale bakeries account for nearly 45% of the market, while the five-bakery cartel dominates 55% of the overall domestic bread supply. On dividing shares, the study said Shamseen came first, seizing 21 to 23% of the local market shares, followed by Wooden Bakery (12-13%), Moulin d’Or (11-12%) and, finally Sultan and Pain d’Or (10-11%). In conclusion, the study noticed a difference in popularity from one region to another which is largely governed by geo-sectarian factors. While Moulin d’Or, Wooden Bakery and Sultan are prominent in the Mount Lebanon and Byblos markets, in terms of the number of branches and their share of supplies and distribution, Shamseen projects itself as the chief supplier for the South and Beqaa areas.
