L’Orient Le Jour daily reported in today’s issue that a group of seven women from the northern area of Akkar are traveling to Spain for a 3-day trip for training on the latest growing and marketing techniques of aromatic herbs and plants, and in order to take part in the 16th ProNatura International expo for rural products and handicrafts in the Spanish city of Segovia. It is to be noted that the seven participants (aged 25- 60 years) who were selected out of 85 women from the different Akkar towns and villages are all beneficiaries of the EU funded project entitled: ‘Exploiting local resources for the development of rural economy in Akkar’ program”. The latter is implemented by the Safadi Foundation in collaboration with the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development within the ‘Ideas-3’ program which is funded by the European Union and managed by the Office of the Minister of State for Administrative Development Affairs. A statement issued by the Safadi Foundation noted that above participation by women from the most impoverished and vulnerable region in Lebanon has a special significance as it gives them the opportunity to travel for the first time and to communicate with the outside world, as well as to acquire new skills and techniques.
