For the first time in the North African country, Egypt’s Financial Regulatory Authority is finalizing a draft bill requiring a compulsory divorce insurance, Shorouk news portal said yesterday. The proposal will reportedly be submitted to the cabinet before being sent to the legislature for deliberation and final approval. According to the above draft law, men should pay alimony as determined by competent parties in specific installments agreed on before the marriage contract is concluded. The said bill sparked wide controversy in the Egyptian community. Supporters maintained that it aims to protect divorced women and ensure they would receive a sum of money to meet her needs and those of her children. Those who opposed the draft considered the bill as an additional burden for young Egyptians to want to marry. (Al Diyar, September 20, 2019)
