Lebanon pins hopes on job-creating industrial zones

26-12-2017

Under the patronage of industry minister, Hussein Haj Hassan, the Italian ambassador to Lebanon, Massimo Marotti, and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) representative in Lebanon Cristiano Pasini, signed last Tuesday a 500 thousand Euro grant to UNIDO in the framework of its continuous aid to develop sustainable industrial zones across the country. On the occasion, Haj Hassan underlined the importance of such zones in order to increase investment prospects and create new jobs in the sector; establish a responsive environment for similar undertakings; secure organized industrial zones equipped with proper infrastructure, communication networks, electricity, water, roads and sanitation system in line with international standards and compatible with ecological and health conditions. Marotti stressed the need to support the Lebanese government in its concerted efforts to stimulate employment for its youth, noting that Italy strongly backs the installation of industrial areas in Lebanon. “Italy has in the first phase, donated a sum of 500,000 Euros to complete a feasibility study by UNIDO and is happy to fund the second phase,” Marotti explained. Likewise, Pasini revealed that UNIDO will carry out the next phase in coordination with the ministry of industry and the Council for Development and Reconstruction. Based on the results of the first phase of the project, Pasini said, UNIDO will continue to deliver technical and mentoring assistance in order to streamline the national strategy for the development and management of industrial zones.
