In its issue of October 4, Al Akhbar daily reviewed the current local series screened on MTV depicting true incidence of domestic violence relating to victim Manal Assi who was beaten to death by her husband Mohamad Nheili (https: // bit.ly/2AQwkOy). The title of the series, ‘Bardaneh Ana’, the newspaper wrote, is taken from the last words the battered wife uttered before she passed away. The series, which was primed by a wide media campaign launched by the Murr owned channel, presents itself as a staunch advocate of women’s rights and a strong critic of domestic violence. It seeks, through drama, to relay stories of women cruelly abused and murdered by their husbands, Al Akhbar wrote. But through the episodes screened until now, it appears that the storytelling technique uses domestic violence crimes as a plot line only. For instead of addressing the issue from all aspects and clarifying the legal contexts of relevant provisos, it tends to polish up the image of security officers, or distract the spectator through parallel stories that obscure the sequence of the main plot.
