NCLW head justifies discriminatory nationality law bill

30-5-2019

The head of the National Commission for Lebanese Women NCLW, Claudine Aoun Rukuz, held a press conference yesterday to justify the draft bill prepared by NCLW and referred to the Cabinet recently. Recalling, that the said proposal has provoked anger for promoting discrimination against women https://bit.ly/2WtVDmd). Aoun said the law which draws a line between underage children and adults in terms of their right to get the citizenship does not discriminate between siblings! Instead, it takes into consideration the fears and concerns about state security, she said, adding, that countries experiencing political turmoil should take all necessary measures to find a proper solution to the problem. Aoun said one should differentiate between the natural right of the Lebanese woman to confer nationality to her children based on the principle of equality granted by the Constitution, and naturalization and permanent settlement. It is a matter of acknowledging the right of a mother to give nationality to her children. Justifying the deprivation of Lebanese women married to non-Lebanese from their right to confer citizenship to their children so as to not upset the sectarian balance, is not substantial, Aoun maintained. Figures confirm that the number of Lebanese men who register their marriages to non-Lebanese women largely outweigh the number of Lebanese women married to non-Lebanese, she explained. The current law promotes naturalization through mixed marriages between Lebanese men and non-Lebanese women who eventually receive the Lebanese citizenship, Aoun noted. It is urgent to highlight the important role the mother plays in imparting values, language and culture of her country to her kids. (Al Akhbar, May 30, 2019)

Women’s key role in management of household budget

28-5-2019

In its issue of today, Al Akhbar newspaper addressed the pivotal role of women, both workers and “housewives”, in managing household matters, especially those economic related. The newspaper described the housewife, even not the working one, as an economic expert, for she regulates a large part of the spending, and hence, the family’s stability is largely dependent on her economic management. Al Akhbar wrote that, the centrality of the role of women is particularly seen during special occasions, where costs, in general, tend to increase and housewives are forced to reconcile the needs of the family and children and available material resources. In this respect, Al Akhbar highlighted the story of Dina Abu Haidar, a working mother of two, who opted to buy her husband and kids clothes during the discount period, thus saving nearly 60% of their original price. As a housewife, Dina explained, “I have to determine the priorities of my family, and therefore, draw a line between necessities and luxuries”. It is very important to know how to wisely use the cash at hand, pointing out that the purchasing strategy she adopted has helped her to better invest in her time. Generally, shopping is time consuming, especially during the holidays, Abu Haidar maintained. But since she plans on shopping ahead, this gave her ample time to carry out other money generating activities besides her regular job. (Al Akhbar, May 28, 2019)

The mother recounted details of the assault, saying she called the police with no answer, so she decided to help her daughter herself. She found a knife and went to face the perpetrators. She explained that she grabbed the knife first to protect herself in the dark path, when she started hearing her daughter’s screams as she approached the house. Upon entering the room, she was terrified seeing her daughter is being raped and began to scream. When the three men came charging towards her, she said she needed to defend herself as an involuntary reaction not realizing the extent of injuries they received. The mother went on to say, that when she went to the court, she was very scared, but the large public support alleviated her grief, especially after she learned that the people launched crowd funding for her legal defense.
