Women's and Children's Rights: woman thrown off a balcony, infant dumped in garbage!

18-12-2018

Al Mustaqbal newspaper of December 15 reminded its readers about the case of husband in the military who beat and demeaned his wife in June 2016. The latter was transferred to hospital after falling off the balcony. The court, the newspaper said, is probing for over a year now to determine if the husband has thrown his wife or the latter has done it voluntarily. Amidst conflicting statements of the spouses who divorced after the incident, the court reportedly summoned more witnesses. During the hearing session, while the defendant insisted that his ex has voluntarily thrown herself off the balcony, the wife neither denied nor confirmed the fact. Three witnesses said they did not see the wife jumping but heard the noise of something hitting the ground. However, one of them corrected his statement to say that he saw her jumping and holding to the handrail, while her brother said his sister called him begging for help. The court in conclusion conceded the defendant’s request to summon his ex to hear her statement again, and to the request of the defense to summon the physician who examined the wife in the hospital. The session was reportedly adjourned till next March. Meanwhile, Al Mustaqbal said today that the body of an infant was found dumped in a waste sorting factory in Saida. The security forces arrived at the scene and started investigation. (Al Mustaqbal, December 15, 18, 2018)

Al Akhbar showcased on Wednesday a documentary by BBC Arabic entitled, ‘My Share is My Right’. The film also screens testimonies by Tunisian women who suffered from this discrimination, in addition to religious views on the issue. BBC Arabic correspondent, Nada Issa, portrays stories of women who campaigned all their life to secure or seize their rights from their male brothers in citizenship. Issa also met the Tunisian president to talk about the new proposals which reportedly will pave the way for the new generation in building a better Tunisia. In the religious part, the reporter spoke to Imam Tayyeb Ghazi, representing the conservative clerics, who maintained that the predicament is not in the legislation, but in the avidity of citizens who renounce Islamic teachings. Lebanon’s family planning & reproductive health strategy

13-12-2018

In collaboration with UNFPA-Lebanon, the minister of public health in the caretaker government, Ghassan Hasbani, launched yesterday the 5-year National Strategy for Family Planning and the National Campaign for Awareness on Reproductive Health. Hasbani pointed to more than one million beneficiaries since 2016 from the ministry’s social welfare centers. Meanwhile, UNFPA revealed that in many incidences of pregnancy which reached care centers women did not undergo early medical examinations, particularly Syrian refugee girls and women. Hence, the campaign for awareness on reproductive health was released in order to avoid such cases and for better family planning. Services provided at primary care centers included, maternity and infant health, family planning and birth spacing, mammography, prostate screening and detection and treatment of infections and reproductive diseases. To note, such services are available at 225 centers across Lebanon. In this respect, Al Akhbar newspaper wrote that most of the centers, totaling 56, are located in Mount Lebanon, dropping to only 20 centers in each of Beqaa, and Baalbak- Hermel governorates, noting that they receive a large number of beneficiaries from the refugee camps targeted by the above campaign, in addition to Lebanese residents. Al Akhbar concluded by saying that the distribution is not quite consistent with Hasbani’s statement on the ‘preemtive and preventive measures’ to be taken to avoid what was described as the ‘ticking time bomb’ created by the absence of family planning at the level of the Lebanese host and Syrian refugee communities.
