Overwhelming resentment of men's violence towards working women in Tripoli

4-10-2016

In a special feature today, Journalist Dumu3 Al Asmar, portrayed in Al Diyar newspaper the anguish felt by working women in Tripoli, North Lebanon, as a result of growing violence (sometime rape) to which women are subjugated, as they compete with men in the workplace. The newspaper pointed out that despite the remarkable presence of women in major sectors, notably, law, medicine and nursing, as well as the high decision making positions which women in the Tripoli fill in the various associations or political parties women’s sectors, yet many working women have expressed their resentment over serious rights violations and patriarchal attitudes by their men colleagues. On the subject, one woman speaking to Al Diyar reporter described the different forms of sexual harassment practiced on women, including verbal and physical abuse, leading in some cases to rape incidents. “There have been many such instances, some were exposed and others hushed for fear of scandal or slander,” she said. “Some people insist on blaming women, while knowing that they are the victims, under the pretext that the women have to pay for competing with men in the professional life and hence have to put up with all sorts of harassment,” she added. Another woman spoke up citing the daily risks girls undergo during while using cabs when some irresponsible taxi drivers pick on them. The problem, the newspaper wrote, is yet exacerbated by the fact that these attacks are seldom formally registered. In conclusion, Al Asmar stressed the need for further awareness- raising campaigns that will target the youth and men in particular. (Al Diyar, October 4, 2016)

New program to promote personal/professional capacities of youth

4-10-2016

LOYAC Lebanon launched yesterday its personal and professional capacity development program 2017 at Sanayeh Park in Beirut in the presence of president of the National Media Council, Abdel Hadi Mahfuz. During the launch ceremony, Mahfuz underlined the role of LOYAC and similar programs that serve as platforms for the enhancement of youth skills, particularly in the creation of job opportunities. He stressed the need to stimulate and activate state-run institutions through disengaging them from confessional or political interferences, noting the significance of women representation at the decision making level in the legislative, executive and judicial branches of government. The latter, he said, should adopt the vision of the young generation and encourage their participation in decision making. For her part, Sally Hamud, LOYAC general manager, pointed out that the association’s present program seeks to inspire the youth through sustainable education, workshops and community volunteering projects, in addition to vocational training, which is also covered by the program.  Hamud said cooperation does not only imply physical assistance in funds or in a large network of relations, but rather a truthful intention to cooperate and breathe a new life into the Arab World as such. “Our doors are open to all companies, institutions and youth without exception,” Hamud concluded. (Al Mustaqbal, October 4, 2016)

Cleansing the process of recruiting migrant women domestic workers to ‎promote human dignity and rights

3-10-2016

The second assessment conference on ‘the role of agencies recruiting migrant ‎domestic workers’ held last Friday at Monroe Hotel in Beirut was called on by ‎the labor minister Sajaan Azzi. Participants included, the owners of ‎recruitment offices from all the Lebanese regions, representatives of embassies ‎that have nationals working and residing in Lebanon, in addition to ‎representatives from the public security apparatus, the internal security forces, ‎and civil society, human rights and international organizations concerned. In ‎his opening address, Azzi “advised his would-be successor to keep to the new ‎protocol of regular consultation and dialogue” which he started between the ‎ministry and the said agencies. Azzi pointed out that the conference “seeks to ‎maintain the profession, boost cooperation, protect dignity and human rights ‎of all parties involved, particularly inside the households that boast their own ‎privacy,” as he put it. The labor minister spelled out that some agencies ‎working in the domain are in fact not operational or non-existent and ‎accomplish only 10 contracts per year. Other offices, he added, tend to lease ‎their working license or the signature, and even do transactions outside their ‎authorized responsibilities, besides agencies that bring in men workers, forge ‎papers and change the generic term or title of the worker. Warning that this ‎will not be acceptable from now on, Azzi revealed that as a result of the ‎screening and investigation, some 122 offices were shut down and 22 others ‎suspended. ABAAD: Violent husbands are prompted by a problematic gender identity

30-9-2016

In cooperation with the Beirut Bar Association women’s Abaad organization ‎organized yesterday a national meeting with the theme ‘violence against women ‎and girls in Lebanon: between legislation and application’. A study prepared by ‎researcher Azza Charara Beydoun entitled ‘domestic violence: men speaking up’ ‎was presented to participants, which featured a sample of men divided across 2 ‎categories: 9 men convicted with violence and 2 men pleading for psychological ‎treatment to their brutality against their wives. The study has shown that all the ‎respondents were against beating their wives, and approving that the husband has ‎no right to restrain or discipline his spouse! What is more, they denied any act of ‎violence against their wives or said what they did was not worth mentioning, as ‎all husbands batter their wives, stated one of them. Besides, men covered in the ‎survey did not admit the existence of any economic, mental or moral abuse, and ‎justified their cruel act as a mere reaction to the act instigated by the wife. The ‎study has also indicated that in most cases, violence appears to be an instance ‎beyond the control of the perpetrator himself, as if it is coerced from outside, ‎befalling the wife in the same way it befalls the violent husband. Even more, the ‎wife is the one to bring violence upon herself or instigate it, hence rendering the ‎act of violence a compulsive or uncontrollable response, as simple as that. The ‎above study included implications for rehabilitation in line with one main ‎assumption: that “behind a violent husband there lies a serious gender identity ‎crisis”. Hence, some of the causes plaguing these troubled identities are not due to ‎the husband’s inability to understand his wife truly and really, but are related to ‎inherent perceptions and attitudes that are in conflict with the current reality of ‎the woman. These men were in total denial of the change in women’s conditions, ‎who now have their own physical resources, particularly the professional career ‎women, and no more in need of outside emotional or financial support. In ‎conclusion, the study pointed out that while men targeted in the survey were from ‎different ages, regions, religions, age of marriage and levels of education, this ‎confirms that violence is not as commonly understood restricted only to the least ‎educated people, Muslims or to rural disadvantaged areas. Women in Britain to achieve parity in salary in 53 years

30-9-2016

In an interesting feature yesterday, Al Hayat newspaper highlighted some ‎findings of a study conducted by the leading international audit firm, Deloitte, ‎which estimated the margin of difference in hourly wages of men against women ‎at 9.4% in Britain (equivalent to GBP1.30). This margin however shrinks by 2.5p ‎every year, which is the annual rate realized by British women in their quest to ‎reduce the gender pay gap in jobs equally shared by both sexes. But despite ‎promises by the current government to achieve full equality in wages over the ‎course of 10 years, Al Hayat went on to say, yet a simple calculation of the ‎differences clearly shows that said commitment cannot be met before the year ‎‎2069. In conclusion, Al Hayat pointed out that the British government has went ‎as far to enforce major establishments to publish a list of wage differences ‎between their men and women staff as of next April, in an intention to "unnerve" ‎companies that pay men more than women in an attempt to achieve equal pay ‎between the sexes. Call for cooperation on social re-integration of female prison inmates

29-9-2016

In partnership with the Swedish organization for international development, Diakonia, and in ‎collaboration with both the ministry of social affairs and the general directorate of internal ‎security forces, the association of Dar al Amal organized yesterday a seminar entitled ‘the social ‎re-integration of former women detainees’. On the occasion held at the Beirut Chamber of ‎Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, the head of the Prisons Department, Lieutenant Colonel ‎Ghassan Othman, described the state of women prisons in Lebanon as sad, painful and ‎problematic, pointing out that the harsh conditions were mainly related to overcrowded cells and ‎worn out buildings that badly require maintenance, in addition to the lack of space and ‎recreational facilities. Othman made clear that the ministry of interior has teamed up with ‎municipalities and the ISF to rehabilitate and develop the present conditions to keep up with the ‎modern standards of reformatory detention centers. In the same spirit, Diakonia- Lebanon Office ‎director, Rodolf Jibrayel, urged authorities concerned to cooperate in order to facilitate the ‎reintegration of freed women detainees through the provision of decent work opportunities. The ‎social rehabilitation and reintegration program implemented by Dar al Amal in three women ‎prisons was also outlined, and the role of civil society and the economic sector highlighted. To ‎close, two prisoners made live testimonies of their post-prison distressed life and the social ‎stigma and rejection by a community that does not give them the prospects of earning a decent ‎livelihood. 2016 National Campaign: 1800 breast cancer cases each year

29-9-2016

The 15th edition of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign 2016 which is organized by ‎the ministry of public health kicks off today under the slogan ‘You never forget anything, yet ‎you might forget the X-Ray, remember it once a year’. On the overall number of female breast ‎cancer patients, the director of Naef Bassil Cancer Institute (NKBCI) at the American University ‎of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMCP), Dr. Naji Saghir, said there are nearly 1800 cases each ‎year, describing the number as alarming and likely to rise. He also voiced concern over the age of ‎the patients as compared to other countries in the region and the world, mentioning that over ‎‎50% of cases are now happening in women under fifty years of age against a 25% limit in Europe ‎and the United States. Saghir however expressed hope for an increased early detection of breast ‎cancer and a corresponding fall in the advanced stages from nearly 80% to 35% which reflects ‎the positive response of patients to treatment. Saghir attributed the level of improvement to the ‎various awareness campaigns that are no longer restricted to the National Day for Cancer ‎Prevention which tours the different Lebanese areas to conduct the necessary screening tests. In ‎conclusion, Saghir drew attention to an important development, which is “adjusting the ‎radiography tests in such that every clinic, association or center are now announcing they have ‎access to the required mammography imaging technology.
