Foreign workers in Lebanon lose 5% of salary because of fluctuating currency

23-9-2019

In its issue of today, Al Akhbar newspaper said migrant domestic workers have received another blow losing between USD 10 to USD 15 of their monthly salaries (that is by 5%) as a result of the fluctuating exchange rate of the dollar against the Lebanese lira. Al Akhbar spoke to Castro Abdallah, the president of the National Federation of Employees and Workers in Lebanon (FENASOL) who said that such exploitation will continue indefinitely if the ministry of labor did not intervene to put an end to it. This status quo is the result of the mayhem in the currency black market and the slackness on part of the government to control the activity of banking institutions and money transfer agencies. Abdallah explained that before the Lebanese civil war, agreements of understanding were made between the labor ministry and the countries sending migrant laborers to ensure their nationals are paid in USD. Today, unfortunately, there is no legal framework which entitles employers to pay with dollars, or at least compensate MWDWs for differences they pay for money transferal as a result of the depreciation in the Lebanese lira, Abdallah said. MP Tabsh calls for more nurseries in the workplace

23-9-2019

Future Movement MP Roula Tabsh on Saturday urged the government to contribute to women empowerment through mainstreaming the culture of nurseries inside public and private institutions. Tabsh who was speaking during a workshop organized by the Syndicate of Nurseries Owners in Lebanon said working mothers should benefit from scholarships and financial aid, in line with the commitment on the part of the government of Lebanon to the implementation of the 5th SDG goal (UN Agenda 2030) on gender equality and women empowerment. Tabsh revealed that she has made a positive first step, which is exempting daycare centers from the value-added tax (VAT). She said she hoped to finalize a draft bill that grants nurseries similar exemptions and privileges like schools and bring them under the jurisdiction of schools in terms of duties and rights. This is expected to benefit the community at large, particularly families and working women, Tabsh added. (Al Diyar, September 22, 2019)

Sunni court ends mother’s custody of two children

20-9-2019

Another tragedy proves the injustice of religious courts in Lebanon, exposing their extent of prejudice against women, Al Akhbar reported today. It recalled, that on 11/1/2012, the Sharia Judge in the Sunni Court of Beirut, Mohamad Naqri, issued a verdict withdrawing the custody of two children from their mother, Mona Abdel Wahab. The decision was based on a medical report filed by the father, Mohamad Ali Abu Kar, diagnosing her with schizophrenia. One month later, on 11/2/2012, Abdel Wahab appealed submitting two medical reports by sworn physicians stating she is mentally sound, Al Akhbar wrote. However, the appeal court then headed by current Mufti, Sheikh Abdellatif Deryan, rejected Abdel Wahab’s request. Noting, that her husband has manipulated the decision of the court of appeal to annex a verdict issued by the Sunni Sharia Court in Saida preventing the mother from seeing her children as she allegedly was a threat to their life. Each time she resorted to the judiciary to reclaim her right to custody, Abdel Wahab was faced with repulsion on part of the judges who refused to what some of them termed ‘break the appeal decision’. More on the subject on the following link: (https://bit.ly/2mritdO). Meanwhile, the director of the Center of Lebanese Studies at LAU, Maha Shoaib, wrote in an article published by Al Akhbar explaining that equality in sharing responsibility of children and the household remains a secondary issue. She is advised to think big and be less demanding, otherwise, she is bringing it upon herself to relinquish her motherhood and give up her children. (Al Akhbar, September 20, 2019)

NCLW urges government to implement gender equality

19-9-2019

The head of the National Commission for Lebanese Women, NCLW, Claudine Aoun Rukuz, pointed out that, in Lebanon as in other world countries, women, like men, seek to realize their capacities unhindered. Women aspire to a society committed to gender equality and to a state which works to guarantee the principle of equal opportunities for all its citizens, she maintained. Rukuz, to recall, was speaking during her participation on September 17 in the Lebanese French ‘Les Elles de la Recherche’ conference to support women in scientific research held in Beirut (https://bit.ly/2mhfYdQ). Pointing to Article 7 of the Lebanese Constitution which clearly stipulates the principle of equality among the Lebanese, Rukuz stressed that government policies should effectuate this basic proviso. The main task of NCLW, she sustained, is to observe and ensure the vigorous implementation of this principle through submitting the institutional and legal reforms to this effect. The Commission is also involved in the preparation of an enabling social environment conducive to equal opportunity among genders, she noted. “These efforts can only succeed with the backing of all active forces in our society,” Rukuz concluded.
