Haj Hassan for boosting the very promising food processing industry

22-12-2017

The minister of industry, Hussein Haj Hassan, stressed on Tuesday the importance of joint work between his ministry, the Industrial Research Institute and the Lebanese Standards Institution (LIBNOR). Haj Hassan who was speaking during the opening of the 3-day food safety training course organized by the ministry underlined the need to deliver information and transfer expertise to the Lebanese industrialists in order to comply with international standards necessary for accessing foreign markets. Haj Hassan also called for the development of the food processing sector, as exports within this category constitute about 75% of total industrial exports. This means that Lebanese-made food products are in demand by foreign consumers, the minister said, noting that exports returned to the country do not exceed 1%. Again, this proves that Lebanese industrialists are in observance of international specifications and that the ministry, the Institute and Libnor are doing their job. In conclusion, Haj Hassan asked industrialists whose exported goods are repeatedly returned to inform the ministry of the causes in order to resolve them. (Al Diyar, December 22, 2017)

Gap in labor market in Tripoli and North Lebanon

15-12-2017

In cooperation with UDDP and Tripoli and the North Bar Association, the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Tripoli organized yesterday a seminar entitled, ‘Examining the gap between supply and demand in the labor market in Tripoli and the North’. The President of the Association, Bassam Ziadeh, said there are no official figures in Lebanon that determine which disciplines constitute a large surplus that cannot be absorbed by the local labor market. Besides, he added, coordination is lacking between relevant ministries, universities and unions to guide students on most wanted occupations. According to Al Mustaqbal newspaper, experts partaking in the discussion pointed out that closing the said gap will stimulate the recruitment of about 3,500 young people within SEZ which initially needs between 5,000 and 7,000 positions. The seminar however revealed big loopholes that ought to be addressed through training, cooperation and the integration of new curricula in vocational or university education in order to alleviate the high rates of unemployment in the North (nearly 35%), Al Mustaqbal wrote. Lebanon’s second capital is in bad need for employment opportunities, given that 57% of its inhabitants are poor, 27% live in extreme poverty and 22% of its youth are unemployed. In conclusion, the seminar has largely shown a shortage in skills impeded by an academic approach that supports theoretical rather than applied education; a vocational education incompatible with the requirements of the local labor market; an absence of collaboration between the vocational and private sectors, and an unawareness to capacity building, namely in the technical areas related to maintenance and mechanics, as well as, in life, operational and managerial skills. Field training in Beqaa on water saving technologies

8-12-2017

As part of its Lebanon Water Project (LWP), and in partnership with private sector agriculture companies, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) launched field days targeting corn and potato farmers in the Beqaa region. The activity is aimed to offer local farmers incentives to apply water-saving technologies available in the domestic market, like the drip irrigation and sprinklers. Some 40 farmers participated in the Incentive Rebate Program intended to connect farmers with providers of water-saving technologies, namely, Robinson Agri, Debbane Agri and Unifert. USAID project head, Rana Maalouf, pointed out that as the agricultural sector is responsible for more than two thirds of water consumption across the nation, hence every measure that contributes to conserving water resources in agriculture will have a remarkable impact. This is why LWP cooperates with agriculture establishments to encourage farmers to switch to water-saving technologies, Maalouf said. (Al Diyar, December 8, 2017)

A study published recently by Fransabank Group underlined the importance of business incubators and accelerators in backing startups and small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), showing that nearly 90% of economically active projects and companies are startups and SMEs. This means, according to the study, that such entities constitute the backbone of the social and economic growth and development in the country.
