10-10-2018

In collaboration with the municipality of Rashayya al Wadi, ‘Rashayya & Beyond’ association organized on Sunday the ‘Molasses Day’ for the third consecutive year to promote the heritage craft of grape molasses making the village is famed for. Around 4000 participants toured Rashayya’s traditional landmarks, namely the ancient molasses presses, Mar Moussa Church and the Vow Tree, as well as the heritage souk where they learned about the making of conventional fireplaces or stoves and silver making industry. The day closed with the distribution of prizes among participants. On the other hand, Al Diyar newspaper drew attention today to the traditional mooneh preparation, noting that despite the availability of cheap foodstuff at commercial stores, yet the special taste and quality of home made food, free from artificial preservative materials, continue to be very popular. Many rural women across the country remain very keen to prepare their house-made preserved food, with the start of each mooneh season, in order to satisfy their household needs as well as earn some extra income by selling their products to shops or to housewives who can no longer prepare traditional mooneh delicacies. “A house empty of mooneh is not a real house”, Um Samir told Al Diyar reporter, boasting that every season prides itself on a set of mooneh treats. The BCG to note has some 16,000 employees worldwide and 550 employees in the Middle East, with a capital of USD 6.3 billion in 2017. Besides her work in consultancy, Hoteit said she focuses on the empowerment of women peers within BCG to encourage them to reach their full potential, particularly in view of the difficulties she faced during her journey. When she first started work, she had to balance motherhood and career, pointing out that firms normally were founded by men who retain privileged positions, and hence she had to persist in her efforts in order to get to where she is today. Later, she became a staunch rights advocate and militant to deserve the Nobel Peace Prize this year. Abusive father acquitted, sex trafficking in Metn and the South

8-10-2018

In the latest incidents of violence against women, the Beirut Criminal Court decided in the case of the girl minor Zainab. M charged with prostitution, her father Ahmad accused of sexually assaulting his child, and Maan. S for having sex with a minor. The ruling in absentia sentenced Maan for two months in prison but found the father and his minor daughter not guilty of their charges. The Court said that, in light of the results of investigation on the minor’s “indecent” conduct, the only evidence about the father’s sexual assault was based on the daughter’s statements which she recanted later, and hence, is insufficient to convict him. The Court also considered that what has been attributed to the father about luring his daughter into sex work was based on the statement of the defendant Maan, citing the girl. No evidence has been found that supports his statement. Regarding the body of a woman found in Dekwaneh-Matn (https://goo.gl/GpRJo5), the ISF Information Department uncovered the consequences of the killing of the Bengali female who ran a prostitution ring. Investigation has shown the involvement of three Bengali nationals and one Lebanese woman in the murder which was sparked by a dispute over money. On the other hand, the Regional Gendarmerie South Investigation Unit said it has information about a person who facilitated prostitution for his wife in collaboration with another woman. As a result, the Unit successfully uncovered the identity and location of the suspects, A.T (48 years), his Syrian wife A. T (29 years) and her national A. K (34 years) and arrested them. Sit-in in solidarity in Beirut with women held in captivity in Suwayda

8-10-2018

The PSP women’s sector organized on Friday a sit-in in front of ESCWA headquarters in downtown Beirut in solidarity with Druze women from Suwayda kidnapped and held in captivity by ISIS. The demonstrators called for their release protesting the prejudiced stand of the international community. The PSP women’s sector’s commissioner, Manal Saeed, strongly denounced the execution of one of the captives, Tharwat Abu Ammar, reiterating her party’s support for the remaining kidnapped women and their children in Syria. “We feel our powerlessness to assimilate the extent of brutality ISIS terrorism has reached, and our inability to understand the disgraceful deafness of the international community towards this humanitarian cause,” Saeed lamented. “We are starting to think that the lives of the kidnapped women have become cheaper for some parties, which drives us to question the reasons behind this discriminatory position,” Saeed said. “We should draw attention to the ugliness of the suffering women put up with during periods of conflict and war around the world in general, particularly in Syria,” the PSP officer said, stressing the importance of the show of solidarity by progressive groups from a purely humanitarian viewpoint. Lebanese authorities halt a conference on gender rights

5-10-2018

Lebanese authorities attempted to stop NEDWA, the annual regional conference on gender rights organized by the Arab Foundation for Freedoms and Equality (AFE) in Lebanon. The 3-day event (September 28-30) had gathered more than 100 activists from 12 MENA countries. In the details, the General Security and the Muslim Scholars Council tried to shut the conference after accusing the organizers of promoting “perversion” and “drug abuse”. On the second day of the conference, AFE executive director, George Azzi, refused to sign a pledge to cancel this year’s event and any similar future event. Accordingly, the GS forced Le Crillon Hotel to stop the conference, which drove organizers to move it to another hotel but faced the same pressure. This is not the first time that religious groups collaborate with Lebanese officials to end gender related activities. In a press conference held by AFE at Small Ville hotel in Badaro, Azzi described the incident as part of a systematic war against freedoms that has been unleashed in Lebanon recently. He said that AFE chose Lebanon to host its annual conference counting on its repute as a venue that still celebrates liberties contrary to other countries in the region. Azzi cautioned that the space for freedom is getting smaller every day, pointing to the coconspirator role of the security apparatus against this human rights issue, which instead of protecting liberties, support extremist factions.
